Step 2: Keyword Research

Search engine traffic is the best type of traffic. You don't get people who just ended up at your site by an unsuspected popup ad or even worse a redirect. That just eats up bandwidth and costs you money. You want targeted traffic who are looking for the service you are offering. Those are the ones who will convert into leads which in turn gets you paid!

The internet is now a major part of any business. With this said, businesses will take part of their advertising budget and market their websites via TV commercials, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ad campaigns, email marketing, print media, radio ads, etc... Basically, theres a lot of competition.

So how do you compete in this cluster fuck called the internet? Think outside the box!

Come up with a good list of keywords/keyphrases that could still capture the audience your looking for, but not cost you the big bucks of the general keywords all the big boys are competing for.

Optimize your website with these keywords/keyphrases and you will also get naturally listed and ranked highly outside of your PPC ads and these don't cost you a penny!

How do you research keywords?

You will first need to setup a Google Adwords account and a Yahoo Search Marketing account. I have links to both companies on the right column of this blog. Both companies offer a variety of keyword selection tools to help you narrow down your search. They even have tools that will suggest alternate keywords for you and give you an idea of how many searches are done daily on those words/phrases. Find words that don't have a lot of advertiser competition on them and a decent amount of search's and start making your list.
